Introduction Return to top of page

GENIE 2.0 is a powerful, flexible data acquisition and control software package designed to run in the Microsoft Windows environment. GENIE provides an intuitive object oriented graphical user interface (GUI) that simplifies control strategy and display setups. You simply select icon blocks from the Toolbox, connect them, and then draw your Dynamic Display. A library of function block icons representing industry standard data acquisition, control, mathematical, and display functions lies at your fingertips.

GENIE includes batch processing, enhanced security, advanced alarming and more. Even though GENIE is powerful, it is still easy to use. Point-and-click convenience allows you to have even the most complex applications up and running in no time.

GENIE provides an icon-based application development environment in which you can create your control strategy with simple drag-and-drop and point-and-click operations. The Strategy Designer Toolbox holds icons which represent industry standard I/O functions and mathematical operations. You place icons on your worksheet, set run-time parameters such as alarms or PID loops, and choose data logging and display options with just a few click of the mouse. When you are finished you can save your strategies and setups for reuse. For more demanding applications, GENIE provides the ability to add user-defined icons to the Toolbox.

Strategy Editor
GENIE provides an icon-based application development environment. You create your control strategy through simple drag-and-drop and point-and-click operations. The GENIE Toolbox holds icons which represent industry standard I/O card functions, control logic and mathematical operations. You simply place the icons on the worksheet to form a flowchart, then set run-time parameters, alarms, PID loops and choose data logging and display options with just a few clicks of the mouse.

When you are finished you can save your strategies and setups for reuse. Cut and paste features let you copy a strategy into a new file.

Display Editor
Within the Strategy Editor you can call up the Display Editor to design display windows for monitoring process status at run time. Like the Strategy Editor the Display Editor uses an icon based graphical interface for easy development. You create displays by selecting icons and dragging them into a display window with a mouse. You then attach the output of a function block to the display window. You can attach the data acquired from a channel to multiple windows, displaying it in different formats at the same time. GENIE supports the following display types:

X-Y graphs, trend graphs, strip charts, bar graphs On/off indicators, numeric displays Buttons, numeric entry boxes Group boxes Text labels

Functions
Data acquisition
Genie can acquire data from multiple DAS boards with multiple channels, display it on the screen and save it to a file in real time. Functions supported are:

Analog input/output Digital input/output Thermocouple measurement Timing

Process control
GENIE offers a range of control functions for open-loop and closed-loop control. When you use open-loop control, a data file or operator input (keyboard, mouse or touch screen) sends data to an output channel. With closed-loop analog control a PID loop equation controls the output. GENIE also supports alarming and on/off control with hardware or software trigger.

Data logging and storage
GENIE can output data to a file and/or print in various data formats. You can specify a file header and overwrite or append a previous data file. GENIE supports the following data formats: ASCII, binary float, byte, integer and long integer.

User programmable blocks
GENIE lets you design your own custom function blocks for sophisticated decision making or calculation. Its powerful C-like language provides functions such as IF-THEN-ELSE, WHILE-LOOP and OUTPUT. Operators include +, -, *, /, MOD, AND, OR, NOT, ::, :, LEFT SHIFT, RIGHT SHIFT, BITWISE AND, BITWISE OR, BITWISE XOR, ABS( ), SQRT( ), RND( ), SIN( ), COS( ) and TAN( ) and more.

If you need even more power, you can access external programs through GENIE's DLL interface.

GENIE Runtime
After you have designed your strategy, you execute it using GENIE Runtime. You can start Runtime from inside the Strategy Editor or as an independent program in Windows. Runtime executes your strategy and outputs data through the displays you created in the Display Editor. You can password protect your strategy to prevent it from being stopped or modified while it runs.
