Quatech’s DSU-100 asynchronous serial USB adapter provides two independent high-speed RS-232 ports. Capable of data rates of up to 460.8 kbaud, the DSU-100 comes standard with two independent 16550 UARTs containing 16-byte FIFOs. These FIFOs, along with the FIFOs in the USB microcontroller, help to relieve the CPU of excessive interrupts by buffering received and transmitted data. To allow the continued use of existing application software designed for traditional serial adapters, the DSU-100 enumerates itself as standard COM ports. Thus, users can continue employing their present serial devices, such as scanners, plotters, modems, barcode readers, touch-screens, ISDN terminal adapters, etc., while at the same time taking full advantage of the benefits that USB provides. For instance, users will not have to concern themselves with the resource issues that exist on the ISA bus when adding a new device-- selecting available I/O addresses and IRQs. Another advantage of USB is plug-and-play capability; the user merely plugs the device in and it configures itself for operation. An additional user friendly feature is hot-plug capability; the user is no longer required to power down the computer before plugging in the device. The DSU-100 is completely compatible with USB specification 1.1. The adapter is bus powered, so no external power supply is needed. It is currently supported only under Windows 98. However, soon after Microsoft releases the OS, the DSU-100 will be supported under “Windows 2000”(formerly called NT 5.0). BAUD RATES:
