What does USB stand for?
Universal Serial Bus |

What is
the maximum number of Quatech USB adapters I can use on my system?
The USB specification
allows for up to 127 USB peripheral devices to be used in a single
system. Each Quatech USB adapter requires one USB port. Thus, by using a
series of hubs, up to 127 Quatech adapters can be used. This means that
(using a 4 port Quatech adapter) a single USB port can be used to
connect 508 serial devices. |

Do
Quatech USB Adapters contain USB hubs as well as serial ports?
No.
Quatech USB adapters do not also included hubs. |
-

Under
which operating systems are Quatech USB adapters supported?
Quatech USB adapters are
supported under USB compatible versions of Windows 98 only. Support is
planned for Windows 2000. |

How do I
know if my version of Windows 98 is USB compatible? |
Download the USB
evaluation utility from the USB website:
http://www.usb.org |

What is
the maximum data rate for USB? How about the max. speed for Quatech
adapters? |
12 Mbps. Quatech USB
serial adapters can reach speeds of 460.8 kbps--more than fast enough
for most serial peripherals. |

I
understand that USB devices are both "plug & play" and "hot-plug"
capable. Does that mean that I don't need any software from Quatech in
order to use my DSU/QSU-100/200/300? |
No. You will need to use
the diskette which comes with the Quatech USB adapter in order to
configure it in your system. After initial configuration, Windows 98
will automatically recognize and configure the adapter upon insertion.
The first time you plug the board into the USB port, Windows 98 will
bring up the "New Hardware Configuration" window to guide you through
the initial configuration process. |

How do
I install my Quatech USB Adapter? |
Follow these simple
directions:
-
Turn on the computer and
boot up the Windows 98 operating system.
-
Plug the wide flat end
of the USB cable into the downstream connector located on the back of
the computer or USB hub. Plug the square end of the USB cable into
back of the DSU/QSU USB box.
-
Once the cable is
connected to the USB box, the "Add New Hardware Wizard" dialog window
should appear.
-
Insert the disk provided
with your hardware into the system's floppy drive and press the 'Next'
button.
-
Select the recommended
option: 'Search for the best driver for your device' and then press
the 'Next' button to proceed to the next window.
-
Select the "Floppy Disk
Drives" check box and click the "Next" button to proceed next dialog
window.
-
When the next window
appears, click the 'Next' button again to view the final dialog window
and then click 'Finish' to complete the installation of your USB
adapter.
-
Once the adapter
configuration is finished, Windows 98 will then configure the
individual serial ports (e.g. COM3, COM4) which completes the hardware
installation process.

How do
I uninstall my Quatech USB adapter? |

from Windows 98, locate the "Quatech USB Devices" category in the
Windows Device Manager. Double click on this category and then click the

Do the
DSU-200/300 and QSU-200/300 boards come with termination resistors? If
so, when do I need to use them and how are they configured? |
Factory installed
resistors allow for DSU/QSU-200/300 signal line termination in
compliance with RS-422 and RS-485 standards. The desired termination can
be selected or removed by configuring the associated jumper for each
port. The factory default configuration is 'no termination'.
Jumpers J2 through J5 (DSU)
or J2 through J9 (QSU) allow the selection of RS-422 (100W) termination,
RS-485 (120W) termination or no termination. For normal operations over
shorter distances or when using a termination in the connecting cable,
the default setting will suffice. For communications over great
distances or if termination via the connecting cable is not feasible,
the jumpers may be configured for the desired termination.
To select RS-422
termination, move the jumpers to pins 1 & 3. For RS-485 termination, use
pins 2 & 4. Ensure both jumpers are configured for each port. To access
the USB adapter directly, remove the four screws on the bottom of the
box and open the top cover. |

What is
the default mode of operation for the DSU/QSU-200/300 adapters? |
The DSU/QSU-200/300
adapters operate in Full Duplex mode by default. The boards may be
optionally configured by the user for Half-Duplex with RTS, Half-Duplex
with DTR or Half-Duplex with Auto Transmitter Control modes of
operation. |
Can I
use the Advanced Options windows in Windows 98 to configure each port on
my Quatech USB adapters separately? |
No. Changing any setting
in the advanced options window will affect all ports on the DSU/QSU USB
adapter. |
Can I
change the properties of the ports on my Quatech USB adapters from the
software package in which I am using the ports? |
No. DSU/QSU port
properties can only be altered from the Device Manager window. Attempts
to access these properties from another software program will generate
an error message box that refers the user to the device manager. |
