Introduction

Simple configuration, easy programming and
supported by major DA & C packages - these are just a few reasons to use
Advantech's ADAM 4000 modules.
The ADAM-4017 is a 16-bit, 8-channel analog
input module that provides programmable input ranges on all channels. This
module is an extremely cost-effective solution for industrial measurement
and monitoring applications. 500VDC optical isolation between the analog
input and the module protects the module and peripherals from damage due to
high input-line voltages.
You can use any high-level language with
ASCII-based string functions (such as C, Pascal or BASIC) to communicate
with ADAM modules or process their data. For example, the command and
response for an analog input module would be: COMMAND: #5, RESPONSE:
>+4.834. This command requests the data stored by the module with address 05
(Hex). The module responds with the value +4.834 V.
ADAM's built in checksum feature ensures
data integrity by detecting communication errors. This feature adds two
checksum characters to every command or response string that enable you to
verify that the message received is exactly the same as the message sent.
Easy-to-use menu-driven utility software
make configuration and calibration a snap. Its terminal emulation program
lets you easily read from and write to ADAM modules. Writing application
programs with this software (GENIE 2.0) is simple,
you can learn the basics in just a few minutes.

Ordering Information
- ADAM-4017
8-Channel Analog Input Module
- The ADAM-4018
is supported by the Genie software, but not listed
in Device setup. Since the data acquisition commands of
ADAM-4018 are exactly the same as those of
ADAM-4017, the ADAM-4018 can be used in
Genie software as if it were an ADAM-4017. Simply
select the ADAM-4017 setting for ADAM-4018 in
hardware setup. 7/11/96
- The zero drift of ADAM-4017 should be
6uV/ºC, not 0.03uV/ºC. This is due to the effects of input attenuator and
S.E. input mode. We will correct this specification in the manual,
brochure and catalog.
- The R10 of ADAM-4017 should be 1K ohm.
Some modules had a 4.7k ohm resistor mistakenly installed at R10. This
causes communication errors after long-term operations. If you find this
problem, please change the resistor or return it to us for a hardware fix.
-

- Q. What is the input impedance of the
ADAM-4017?
- A. The ADAM-4017 has an
input impedance of 200,000 Ohms. The difference with other ADAMs is caused
by different input resistors. Since some resistors have been added to the
input terminals, thus the resistors change the input inpedance. We will
change these resistors in the future version to provide a higher input
impedance. (10/11/96)
-
- Q. First reading is error on ADAM-4017?
- A. If the firmware
version of ADAM-4017 is V1.1 or earlier and the integrated time is set to
60ms (50Hz), the reading of ADAM-4017 will be incorrect some times. Please
check the firmware version by ADAM software to confirm this problem. This
problem can be solved by setting the integrated time to 50ms (60Hz) or
send it back for upgrading the firmware to Rev.1.2. (10/11/96)
-
- Q. When using an ADAM-4017 to measure a
3~4mA current input, it always shows -20mA, why?
- A. Normally, the condition is caused by
a calibration problem. The user needs to re-configure the ADAM-4017 range
to +/-20mA, then run the zero calibration.
-
- Q. The ADAM-4017 seems
to have temperature fragility, resistor R10 is listed as both 1K and 4.7K
Ohm, which one is correct?
- A. The correct value
for R10 is 1K ohms. We have further test results regarding the ADAM-4017
R10 problem. In our test, we use three ADAM-4017's with R10 at 4.7K and
one ADAM-4011 in a test chamber at 70 deg C.
After about 8 hours of testing, we found only one of the ADAM-4017
wouldn't work. This module also worked again when we colded down the
temperature to 62 degC. (8/6/96)
